The Race

Patagonia Verde Edition, cross the Patagonian pampas, traveling between lakes and mountains,
along the iconic Carretera Austral and the Pacific fjords.


The starting point is Coyhaique, in the Aysén region in Chilean Patagonia, a city easily accessible from Balmaceda airport. This year the Base Camp will be Patagonia Bikers by Specialized, with a hotel, cabins, restaurant and a unique local experience. The challenge is to cross Chile in 130 hours, from November 19 to 24, 2023, in Gravel / Bikepacking mode, through one of the most challenging routes at the end of the world, covering 1,000 kilometers of history among the Patagonian peoples. You will explore the Andes mountain range in various different climbs, accumulating more than 15,000 meters of ascent.

The terrain is mixed with 70% gravel and 30% paved roads including a ferry crossing. You can take part with a Gravel bike or a mountain bike (MTB), but the fastest will win. Below you can see our recommended setup, a Gravel bike with 40c tyres and Apidura Bikepacking equipment.

Route History

Between Chile and Argentina you can find the longest and oldest mountain range in the world, a natural wall that separates these two countries, with more than 43 border crossings, authorized and unauthorized, inviting you to pass from one side to the other from the driest desert in the world in the north to the forests and glaciers in the south. Patagonians, we invite you to be part of this new version of AcrossAndes 2023, Patagonia Verde.

Patagonia Verde

The Aysén region is a sparsely populated area in southern Chile, with large glaciers, fjords, and snow-capped mountains. The Laguna San Rafael National Park encompasses the Northern Ice Fields of Patagonia, which has numerous glaciers on inland lakes and rivers. The highest mountains include Cerro Castillo, 2,675 m above sea level and with its famous jagged peaks, located within a natural reserve with the same name.

In this edition of Across Andes, Patagonia Verde, you will travel along majestic gravel roads, in addition to the well-known Carretera Austral, passing through: La Paloma, Queulat and Fiordos de Puyuhuapi, Lago Verde, reaching the coast of Raúl Marín in the Pacific Ocean and end by crossing the Simpson Valley.
